Three (Non-Writing) Things Every Writer Needs to Post About on Social Media

When it comes to the things writers should post on social media, you’ve got to talk about a lot more than just your work or your field. I’m sharing the top three things every writer needs to post about on social media… other than your writing!

When you’re a writer, you often eat, sleep, breathe, and play in the writing world. It’s just the way it goes. So it’s understandable that when it comes to your social media accounts, you’d want to post about writing.

And you should. Sometimes.

But you’ve got to incorporate other topics and interests if you want to grow an engaged, excited audience.

3 Non-Writing (or Reading!) Things Writers Should Post on Social Media

1 - The special people/pets in your life

People on social media want to get to know you. Not just an author, but as a person. One of the easiest ways to build connection is through sharing about your personal relationships. Things that do well in this category: pets, kids, partners, friends.

When your readers can see how you connect and love the special people and animals in your life, they’ll feel like they know and trust you better. That’s key to getting them to stick around and remain interested, especially between book releases.

2 - Your morning routine

Always start the morning with a cup of coffee on your deck? Share a photo and talk about why you love your quiet time. Feel like your mornings are a disaster of kids and breakfast dishes and lost shoes? Share it! People will feel seen and understood.

When someone gets a peek into your daily routine, it builds intimacy and relationship. This is an easy way to share something that feels highly personal to the viewer without disclosing too much information (if that makes you uneasy).

3 - Your city/home/space

Popping in to a cute coffee shop? Share a snap of their adorable signage. Worked really hard on a home reno project? Share the before and after. Give some context to where you live, work, and play.

You don’t have to get super specific here. If the thought of sharing the interior of your home makes you cringe, don’t worry! You can share pretty flowers from a walk, a colorful front door in your neighborhood that makes you smile, or the resident “tiny free library” on your corner. Just let people get a glimpse of your “home” to build that connection.

Which of these non-writing (or reading) ideas are you most excited to share on your social media? Have an idea for another topic you could post? Leave them in the comments so we can all share!
